Job searching and COVID-19 – what you need to know

Times are certainly difficult with the anxieties of the unknown, what will happen, what should we do, when will this end – in fact, most of us can pretty much say we have never witnessed anything like this current outbreak.
Whilst the government is doing their best to advise us there will always be a level of panic; we are seeing countries go into lockdown, for how long we don’t know. Will it work? Will a vaccination become available soon? We don’t know the answers to these questions so, for the time being, we all have to be sensible and try to carry on as normal, but taking the correct precautions as we do so.
Adversity = Opportunity
When uncertainty hits it usually helps the recruitment market – in the temporary labour supply at least, anyway – since companies don’t want to make the commitments to permanent contracts as they don’t know if business levels will be sustained. This then provides an opportunity for Job Seekers, not only to find work but to try out different roles.
We will witness workers self-isolating which will then require personnel to replace them for a short term, but we will also see the supply chain stretched in certain areas – take the supermarkets, their business is booming with all the press about panic buying, however, that stock has to be and will be replaced, creating opportunities that wouldn’t normally be available.
BBC News states that Amazon is recruiting 100,000 roles to keep up with online demand, and this is a perfect example of opportunities coming forward during a crisis.
What the future holds is very difficult to predict, but we are certain we will come out the other end at some point. All we can really do is make everyone’s lives as easy as possible, follow the NHS and Government guidelines, and try to be sensible about how we act in this out-of-the-ordinary situation.
